Parking in Valletta ring road is free. However, parking within the fortified city comes at a charge on weekdays between 8am and 2pm. Parking after 2pm and on weekends and public holidays is free of charge!

Deciphering Valletta’s Parking System: To park or not to park. That is the question!

In Valletta’s streets you will find three kind of parking bays: white, blue and green.

These colour-coded bays work as follows: White parking bays are for everyone: Anyone can park on a white parking space 24 hours a day. Green parking spaces are for residents only, any time of day. Blue parking spaces are a combination of both: visitors can park in a blue parking space between 8am and 7pm. These parking spaces are exclusively for residents after 7pm.

The CVA System

Parking inside Valletta is monitored through a system called “Controlled Vehicular Access” (CVA). The system makes use of Automatic Number Plate Reading (ANPR) technology and dedicated camera systems to monitor and photograph vehicles entering and exiting the CVA boundary. The system then automatically calculates the time the vehicle remained inside the Valletta CVA boundary and finally computes the fee due for access and parking, if applicable, based on the tariffs issued by Transport Malta. Electric vehicles and motorcycles are exempt from the CVA payment scheme and park for free.

The vehicular entry points into Valletta are St. Paul Street, St. Mark Street, West Street, Merchant’s Street (Next to Identity Malta), North Street, Mediterranean Street and Old Bakery Street. The vehicular exit points are St. Ursula Street (Next to Upper Barrakka), Victoria Gate, Republic Street (bottom part), St Lucia Street (Marsamxett side), Mediterranean Street, Old Bakery Street, St. Nicholas Street and Mattia Preti Square.

The Valletta Ring Road

The Valletta ring road – the street going from around Marsamxett, St Elmo, the Seige Bell War Memorial, and the ex Pixkerija – is outside the CVA zone and parking in these parking bays is free of charge. Many people prefer parking in the Valletta ring road and go to Valletta Centre on foot.

Car Parks just outside the City

There are also a number of car parks on Valletta’s doorstep. These include MCP Floriana car park which is offering FREE parking on specific days this Christmas season, Independence car park on Great Siege Road just opposite Phoenicia Hotel’s side entrance as well as a huge car park in Floriana Football Pitch. You can also park in the Park and Ride Facility in Blata l-Bajda which includes a free shuttle service to the heart of Valletta. The facility is open Mondays to Sundays (including Public Holidays) from 6am to 9pm.
